Study Prompts Calls to Extend At-Home Abortion Limit
Health experts are urging the UK to allow at-home medical abortions up to 12 weeks of gestation, following new research confirming the procedure is both safe and effective. The call to action is based on a peer-reviewed study published in BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health.
This comprehensive review provides strong evidence that could reshape national policy, aligning it with international health standards and practices already in place in Scotland.
Researchers and reproductive health advocates argue that updating the law across the UK is a critical step in ensuring equitable access to abortion care.

Evidence from NHS Lothian Study
The study analyzed five years of data from NHS Lothian in Scotland, where at-home medical abortions up to 12 weeks are legally permitted.
Key Findings
Effectiveness: The research found a 97% success rate for complete abortions in both the at-home and hospital-based groups, indicating no significant difference in efficacy.
Safety Profile: Four serious complications were recorded in the at-home group of 258 women. However, none required critical care, and the authors noted the numbers were small and consistent with complication rates for pregnancies at this stage.
Patient Choice: Of 485 women between 10 and 12 weeks of gestation, more than half (258) opted for the at-home procedure.
These findings reinforce guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), which already recommends that home medical abortion can be safely managed up to the 12-week mark.
